Beginnings

Stephen Bankole-Wright who has adopted the stage name SBWMUSIC has been making music for more than a decade. Although he was born in California, his family moved to the D.C. area when he was not much more than a month old. There, he was immersed in the rich gospel sounds and often experienced the raw talent of amazing artists such as Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, and Donnie McClurkin just to name a few.

It wasn’t until he moved back to California during his high school years that he realized his passion for writing music. Stephen was often found in his room writing songs in his journal, and making beats on his computer. He produced and recorded his first song when he was fourteen. He was accepted into California Baptist University and finished his bachelor’s degree in music education. His classmates often called him SBW in attempt to “say his whole name without saying his whole name.” This is what eventually became his stage name during a period of rebranding.

During his senior year in college, he released his first digitally distributed single, SUMMER NIGHT, which was a favorite amongst close family and friends. After releasing his debut single he released a few more singles such as his Christmas cover, O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL and WALKING IN MY BLESSING. He took a three day sabbatical between his undergraduate and graduate studies in 2019 and then began to pursue music for another 3 years. During this time he released more singles such as CHASING ME DOWN featuring Taylor Jaskot on guitar, and sampling LADYBLU’S vocals. He helped establish a production company and band called CREW 12 in 2020.

During that time, he gained experience in producing a Christmas EP and produced his single Real Love, which was his most popular song amongst his fans. Although his time with the band was short lived, he continued to further his musical journey and education into graduate school. After stepping away from social media for a while and teaching music at a middle school, he decided that it was time to press the record button again and continue sharing his journey with the world mid-2022.

His single, SO GOOD was his first viral single on social media and the first single under his rebrand from Stephen Bankole-Wright to SBWMUSIC. While SO GOOD and FAITH OVER FEAR were his summer anthems, SING JOY, his Christmas collaboration with Michael Evan Moore was the first song that gave him a large amount of exposure across all of the digital streaming services. Stephen has since then graduated with a master’s degree in music, produced and collaborated with more artists, and is expected to release more projects in 2023. His most recent release and music video was BRAND NEW, which was mixed by Moore Music, and video-graphed by Taylor Jaskot.
